Tsubasa RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE Chapter Summaries
Ch 1-15 :: Ch 16-30
01. "The World of Beginnings" - Syaoran returns from his excavation trip, and guess who's the first one to welcome him home? Sakura is disappointed that Syaoran addresses her so formally by calling her "princess," and she insists that he call her by her first name again. The two have known each other for seven years. Syaoran and his father Fujitaka came from a foreign country to Sakura's country because of Fujitaka's interest in the ruins. When Syaoran's father died, Sakura asked Syaoran to come live with her in the castle, but he refused because he wasn't of royalty. Sakura tells him about her lonely feelings when he's off on an excavation, and wonders if he ever thinks about her. She's about to confess her love when the castle bell rings and interrupts the two. Syaoran watches her go back to the castle, wondering to himself about their relationship.
Sakura tries to sneak back into the castle unnoticed but fails. Touya is waiting for her, and he knows that she had been at "that kid"'s house. The two engage in an argument as Sakura tries to tell her brother that Syaoran is not a brat. They are interrupted by the appearance of Yukito. Yukito tells them that the ruins are deeper than they thought, and the excavations will be going on for a while. Touya smirks at the thought of the prolonged excavation and how Syaoran will be very busy. Sakura takes off angrily, and Touya and Yukito have a confidential chat together. Yukito senses the princess's (Sakura's) mysterious powers. Both he and Touya know there is great trouble approaching for Sakura.
As Sakura stands on a balcony and thinks happily about packing a lunch for Syaoran tomorrow and finally telling him her feelings, she hears a bell-like sound. The sound seems to call out to her, and images flash through her mind; images that include a distressed-looking Syaoran. The next day, Sakura arrives with lunch for Syaoran at the excavation site. There is a strange mark on the ground; the same mark Sakura saw yesterday as she stood on the balcony. When she stands on the mark and touches it, mysterious warriors suddenly appear from under the ruins and begin attacking. Sakura falls unconscious after wings appear on her back. The wings then disappear as Syaoran worriedly cries out Sakura's name. He carries her back to the others. Touya is critically injured from a poisonous blade. Yukito reads her memories and discovers that her wings have flown away. (tsubasa!) The wings were Sakura's spirits. Now all her memories have flown away, and she will die if her wings are not found. Yukito sends Syaoran off to see the witch of dimension in order to help the princess.

02. "The Price of Memories"- Kurogane the ninja makes his appearance in this second installment. He is under the rule of Tomoyo, the princess of Japan. Kurogane's goal is to become stronger than anyone else, and that is why he fights. He doesn't care who dies in order for him to live. Tomoyo smiles sadly and agrees that no one is stronger than him in this country. She sends him off to another dimension where she hopes he will learn the true meaning of "strength." Before sending him off, she puts a spell on him that will cause his strength to decrease after each killing. In the country of Celes, Sorcerer Fye D. [Flourite] emerges from the waters of a fountain (?) and tells Chii that he will be going off to a dimension far far away from the Prince Ashura. He changes the form of Chii before he takes off for the witch's dimension.
In the witch's dimension, Syaoran learns from her that Sakura will die if her wings (representing her soul and memories) that flew to different worlds are not found. Kurogane and Fye appear, each wanting a request to be granted. Kurogane wants to go back to his original place, while Fye does not. The witch tells them that their requests are in essence the same. The goals differ but the means are the same. In exchange for granting Syaoran's wish of going into various worlds to find Sakura's memories, the witch of dimension wants Syaoran's most important thing-his relationship with Sakura. From Kurogane, she wants his sword. Fye's price is the tattoo on his back. All three agree, and she gives them Mokona who will serve as their guide into the next world.
03. "The Feather of Chance" - The witch warns them of the dangers and difficulties of the other worlds. People they knew in earlier worlds would live completely different lives in the new one. Even if they were kind to them in the past, they should not expect the same treatment in another world. The witch doesn't know where the pieces of Sakura's memories are or even whether Syaoran will be able to collect them all. This does not change Syaoran's resolve to help Sakura though. Mokona opens his mouth wide and the four (including Sakura) are sucked in. Their journey has now begun.
They arrive in the new world, and Syaoran calls out Sakura's name frantically when he wakes up to see her gone from his arms. He hugs Sakura and notices her cold body. Fye finds a piece of Sakura's memories (a feather) on Syaoran's cloak. It is from when her wings disappeared. Her body warms up a little as the memory returns to her. Fye wonders how they will be able to find the other feathers. Mokona pops up excitedly and tells them that he can sense when the feathers are close. (Mokona can talk in this series xD;) Kurogane tells Syaoran that this search for the feathers is selfish and he won't have anything to do with it. Syaoran replies with a very serious expression. He understands if Kurogane won't help, since this is Syaoran's problem. The door opens and Sorata Arisugawa and his wife Arashi enters. Sorata knows why Yuuko (the witch of dimension) sent them to his world, and they couldn't have arrived at a better place. They are now in The Republic of Hanshin.
04. "The Power to Fight" - Sorata gives the three an explanation of Hanshin. Fye asks him if everyone in the republic talk like him (using words from the olden days) Something is thrown at Kurogane from above. Sorata tells them that the "kudan" has made its decision. The kudan that exist in this world haunt them, but can be of help depending on their heart and mind. Mokona can sense that Sakura's wings are in this world. They're very far away though. Sorata and his wife give the three rooms to stay in. Until they go to the next world, they can live in the house. Fye and Kurogane stay in the same room, and Syaoran stays with Sakura. He doesn't want to leave Sakura's side, but Arashi tells him to try to get some sleep. In his dream, he meets [Rayearth], the ruler with the power of fire. He can sense Syaoran's strong desire to protect the one precious to him, and he grants his powers to Syaoran. Syaoran gasps and wakes up. He touches his chest and feels heat.
05. "The Moment of Awakening" - The three decide that sitting around in the room won't help them find Sakura's wings, so they go off to explore Hanshin. Arashi stays home to keep watch over Sakura, and Mokona leads the group. Before leaving, Sorata gives Syaoran a frog-like object that will cover lunch for the three of them. Kurogane gets angry (again) because Sorata gave the object to Syaoran since Syaoran was the most "trustworthy." A vendor on the streets asks them if they want to buy an apple. Apples and other fruits look different in different worlds, and Syaoran becomes confused. They lean against the railings of a bridge as they eat the apples and discuss how they came to see the witch of dimension. (Fye is still calling Kurogane odd nicknames in order to get him angry xD;) Syaoran looks at his apple sadly and remembers a memory of Sakura. A bunch of guys wearing goggles suddenly appear and begin destroying the place. The people on the streets say it's because of the kudan, and Syaoran once again feels heat from his chest. One of the attacks is about to hit two boys, and Syaoran runs over to shield the two. One of the men with the goggles watches from above and remarks to Syaoran that his kudan seems to be pretty special.
06. "The Heart's Strength" - The man with the goggles introduces himself as Asagi Shougo. He is fascinated with the power Syaoran seems possesses. The gang leaves as the police come, and Asagi tells Syaoran that he is looking forward to their next meeting. One of the boys Syaoran had been protecting disappears. Turns out he was a kudan. The trio look around for Mokona and see him being showered with attention from a group of girls. Mokona sensed one of Sakura's feathers close by earlier, but the feeling was gone now. The other boy comes up to the trio now. His name is Saitou Masayoshi, and he helps them find a good restaurant to eat at. Everyone gets a plate of okonomiyaki, and Masayoshi explains about the fight on the street that just occurred. It's a fight for territory and about who has the stronger Kudan. There are many different teams, and Masayoshi's team does the patrolling. When the other teams battle, they destroy buildings and cause a ruckus. Masayoshi admires Asagi and his team, who don't do the normal destruction. Asagi has a "special class" kudan, and Masayoshi tells Syaoran that his is one too. He explains the hierarchy of the kudans. A special kudan only haunts a person with a strong heart; a person like Syaoran and Asagi. Syaoran is about to tell Fye how he received his kudan when two waiters appear...who look exactly like Touya and Yukito!
07. "Joined Worlds" - Touya tells Syaoran that he is mistaken. He is not "your highness." As he walks away, Yukito teases him about it. Touya and Yukito seem to live completely different lives from the world where Syaoran came. Though they live different lives in this world, their souls are essentially the same. After eating, Masayoshi phones home to see if he can help the trio search. As Syaoran tells his story about the dream with the fire beast, Fye and Kurogane comment that they had a beast appear in their dreams too. A person with spiky hair followed by his gang suddenly appears, demanding the presence of Syaoran. Asagi Shougo apparently told the spiky haired guy that he liked Syaoran, and the guy threatens Syaoran to not join Asagi's team. Syaoran tells him that he doesn't plan on joining any teams, and the guy releases his kudan to attack Syaoran. It is a first class kudan, and Kurogane jumps into the action, determined to help Syaoran. (Plus, he hasn't fought anybody for a while.) His kudan appears, having a striking resemblance to Selece from MKR. He is given a sword and quickly defeats the spiky-haired guy's kudan. The guy looks frightfully at Kurogane, accusing him of already being a part of "Syaoran's Team." Kurogane informs him of his mistake. He only works for one person, and that person is Princess Tomoyo.
08. "The Land Where Gods Dwell" - Syaoran, Fye, and Kurogane return to the house. Sorata explains more about the kudan. Kudan can be called the gods of Hanshin. Since everyone in Hanshin has a kudan, there is not one person who does not have the protection of a god. By searching for Sakura's wings in this country, they don't need to worry about war or bad people that occupy other countries. Arashi makes a comment about the feather Mokona sensed earlier, coming to the conclusion that it was taken by a kudan in the fight since the feeling Mokona had appeared and then disappeared after the kudan left. They need to look for someone with a strong kudan since the pieces of Sakura's memories are also strong.
Syaoran visits Sakura in her room, and a flashback of her in bed with a fever comes to his mind. In the flashback, Sakura blushes and tells Syaoran that she will get better quicker if he allows her to hold his hand. Syaoran promises to stay at her side, and she smiles, happy that he will be the first person she sees once she wakes. Present-day Syaoran holds Sakura's hand tightly and promises her he won't fail. The next day, the trio start their search for the kudan who may have Sakura's feather. Saitou Masayoshi appears to join them. A big bird-like creature appears from the sky and takes Masayoshi away. A letter drops to the ground with the message "I'm waiting at Hanshin Castle."
09. "The Magician's Kudan" - Syaoran quickly shows the letter to Fye and Kurogane, but for some odd reason, they can't understand each other anymore. There's nothing different in the way they're speaking, but Syaoran can't understand their speech. At Hanshin Castle, Masayoshi is held captive along with Mokona. The kidnappers (bandanna wearing folks) had mistaken Masayoshi for Syaoran because he was the smallest one there. The trio approach the castle and see Mokona and Masayoshi dangling at the top. The three can understand each other again. It appears that Mokona is the one helping translate, and without Mokona, they can't understand each other. They dash towards the castle and Syaoran asks the crowd of people for the writer of the mysterious letter. Primera (Lantis's fairy from MKR) appears, revealing herself as the writer. She won't give back Masayoshi and Mokona without a fight with Syaoran. Syaoran can't climb up to the top of the castle, but Fye can with the help of his kudan. (Windam; MKR once again.) He flies up to where Primera is, and she attacks him with her kudan.
10. "The Whereabouts of the Feather" - Fye escapes from the blast of Primera's kudan safely. She's very irritated now, and tells him to stop moving around so quickly. Primera wants to fight Syaoran, not him. He keeps dodging her attacks, and Kurogane tells Syaoran that even though Fye's kudan allows him to fly, his agility in avoiding her attacks are of his own doing. Syaoran, still on the ground, wants to help Fye in someway. Primera's kudan transforms into a microphone shape, and a huge blast hits Fye. He emerges from the trees unhurt, surprised that her kudan could do something like that. Since Mokona doesn't react to Primera while he fights with her with his kudan, it means Sakura's feathers aren't nearby. Primera tries to attack Fye again, but he is too fast, and jumps on top of the surprised Primera. She cries out in anger and frustration, and unwittingly lets off a blast that frees Masayoshi and Mokona. The two fall, and someone calls out a kudan to help them land safely on the ground. Asagi Shougo makes his appearance, and exasperatedly asks Primera what she is doing. Mokona reacts at the sight of him. Can it mean that he holds one of Sakura's feathers?
11. "The Kudan of Flame" - Shougo berates Primera for the damage she has done. The crowd of people (men) watching start crying, and they tell Shougo that Primera is sad because she likes Shougo, but he won't pay attention to her. Kurogane flips through the magazine where Primera pronounced her affections for Shougo to the public. ^^; Primera thought that be kidnapping Masayoshi (whom she mistook to be Syaoran) and Mokona, Shougo would come visit her more often and play with her. Mokona begins reacting again, and the trio deducts that the feather must be inside a kudan. A kudan is strongest when protecting somebody, so they probably need to fight the kudan in order to obtain the feather. Shougo wants to fight Syaoran because he has such a strong heart, and Syaoran accepts his request. Syaoran needs power in order to find all of Sakura's feathers. His kudan appears to help him, and the fight begins. Shougo narrowly dodges the attacks and remarks about Syaoran's strength. Syaoran is strong because he has something he needs to do. A strong blast erupts, and Masayoshi worries that Syaoran got carried away by the river current. He appears unharmed, a deadly look in his eyes. Masayoshi is extremely impressed by Syaoran, and wants to be strong like him. A strong blast heads his way, and he desperately tells himself that he needs to help defend. Masayoshi's kudan appears. It's a larger version of Masayoshi himself. (Think of that monster the princess of Fahren summoned once) Mokona reacts excitedly. The feather is inside his kudan!
12. "Proof of A Hero" - No wonder Mokona did not react to Masayoshi's kudan earlier. A kudan releases its strongest power when it protects its owner. The last time Mokona had reacted was when the kudan was protecting Masayoshi. The kudan had merely been used for searching the other times. The kudan puts Masayoshi in his palm to protect him as the castle is ready to collapse at any moment. Masayoshi's kudan starts uncontrolledly shooting beams of energy everywhere. Sakura's feather has made it too strong for Masayoshi to control. Syaoran goes off with his kudan to retrieve Sakura's feather, promising the others that he won't die. Syaoran jumps into the flames as Sakura's feather places itself in the center of Masayoshi. (His heart, perhaps?) Seeing Syaoran's pains to get through the flames, Masayoshi grits his teeth and pulls Sakura's feather out of the flames and his kudan, giving it to Syaoran. His kudan becomes smaller and smaller, and Shougo uses his kudan to provide rain so the fire goes out. Syaoran holds the first of Sakura's missing feathers happily in his hands. He finally got one back.
13. "The Reason For A Tear" - Syaoran eagerly rushes back to the house to give the feather to Sakura. He holds her hand as he waits for her to open her eyes. Sakura's body absorbs the feather, and a moment passes before she opens her eyes. "Who are you?" she asks. Syaoran is dismayed; Sakura had lost her memory. Syaoran forces a smile on his face as he introduces himself. He tells her that she is a princess from another world, and they are together to search for her memory. Concerned about Syaoran, Fye introduces himself and the rest of the people while Syaoran leaves the house and stands outside in the rain. Inside, Fye and Kurogane are worried about Syaoran. They wonder if he is crying outside. Not crying might mean Syaoran was becoming stronger, but crying is also a sign of strength. Syaoran's kudan stands beside Syaoran, worried about him as well. Inside, Sakura feels an emitting warmth from her hands. Elsewhere, two people are watching this scene from a mirror.
14. "The Time To Leave" - Masayoshi thanks Syaoran for all the help he has given him. He acknowledges that he and his kudan are still weak. Syaoran tells him that they're not really weak. Trying with all of one's strength on someone else's behalf is also a sign of strength. The Touya and Yukito waiters come to serve Syaoran's table. Syaoran apologizes for ending the battle with Shougo halfway through. Shougo tells him that there had been no other way given the situation, and he would have lost anyway if the battle had gone on. Syaoran shakes hands with Shougo and Masayoshi before he leaves the restaurant with Fye, Kurogane, and Mokona. Back in the restaurant, Shougo asks Masayoshi if he would be interested in joining his team. Masayoshi happily agrees. Syaoran smiles as he looks back at the happy expression.
They return to the house to say goodbye to Arashi and Sorata. Sakura stands to the side with a tired expression on her face. Syaoran gives her a sad side-long glance. Kurogane tells him to stop looking down. "If you have something to do, only look forward." Arashi and Sorata wish them good luck in finding Sakura's feather in the next world. Mokona opens his mouth and they are sucked into it to the next world. Syaoran sees his kudan on the way to the next world, and thanks him from the bottom of his heart. They fall into the middle of a busy marketplace once they reach the next world. An angry man stomps over, demanding to know their identities. He grabs Sakura's arm, and Syaoran immediately delivers a flying kick at the man's face. Fye, Kurogane, and Mokona grin from the side. The crowd becomes noisier at this display of violence, and someone yells at Syaoran, asking him if he knew who he had just kicked. A person on the roof of one of the buildings yells "Stop It!". Who is this mysterious person?
15. "The Country of Secrets" - The girl, Chunhyang, calls the man who had grabbed Sakura's arm an idiot. The man is the son of Ryanban, a powerful feudal lord. He becomes angry and leaves with his friends. Sakura thanks Syaoran for helping her, and he goes over to pick up all the overturned fruits and cartons. Sakura, also helping clean up the mess, glances at Syaoran with a forlorn, wondering gaze. Chunhyang comments on their odd outfits, and lead them to her house. She thought they were the amenosa, people sent by the government to act as spies. The amenosa travel around to keep the Ryanban from tyranny, keeping tabs on the lords. Ryanban is an extremely bad person, and Chunhyang wants the amenosa to come and get rid of him. As she speaks, there's a strong wind outside the house, and it destroys part of Chunhyang's house before disappearing. Fye comments on the unnatural wind, and Chunhyang is sure that Ryanban sent the wind. Elsewhere, Ryanban is looking upon the damaged house from his crystal ball. His son asks him if they are really the amenosa. If if they are, they won't be defeated, Ryanban replies as he looks with a sinister grin at Sakura's feather inside his crystal ball.
